Doug Carter Artist,.Fine Art " Bug Shack " 7 X 5 Board,.

This is a Snow Cone shack that has a rainbow painted bug as advertisement. Well it worked because it certainly caught my eye in a big way. The trick with this painting was to decide what to add and take out of the painting. I loved the shack and loved the Volkswagen couldn't make a decision. So as you can see I decided a little of both would work. Next was the value decisions the back side of the shack was to dark so I had to change it and give a little depth. May have painted the trees in the background to warm as well . I still want  to paint the bug by itself with all the colors going in and out of shadow quite the challenge. This is what I love about painting, each one brings new opportunities and challenges. You painters out there let me know what is your hardest challenge to paint.

Sergei Bongart Article

STILL LIFE PAINTING is an important part in my workshops.I did this still life demo yesterday to start  my Amarillo workshop.I still have in my ear, what my former teacher Sergei Bongart said:"If you can paint still life's,than you can paint everything." It's just a good way for the students to jump right away into the colors.Starting a workshop with landscape painting, can be more discouraging ,because in a landscape the colors are not always bright right in front of your nose,so you need to be more courageous to exaggerate and stressing your phantasies. But if you come home first day with a colorful painting, that gives you selfconfidence to attack the landscape the next day with a little bit more zest.

10 plain air mistakes by Kathleen Dunphy

"Indian Summer," by Kathleen Dunphy, oil, 12 x 12 in.
Here are Dunphy’s Plein Errors, delivered as David Letterman might:
No. 10: Forgetting to squint to eliminate detail and see values more clearly.
No. 9: Getting bogged down in detail instead of massing in the basic shapes.
No. 8: Painting over an incorrect passage and making mud instead of scraping down/wiping off that section to start over.
No. 7: Painting too large a canvas for the amount of time available before the light changes.
No. 6: Not mixing up enough paint and skimping on paint application.
No. 5: Giving up too early.
No. 4: Wiping off the entire painting in the field (your painting might just be better than you think it is…)
No. 3: Focusing on one area too long instead of seeing the entire design.
No. 2: Using small brushes at the start.
No.1:  Not having a clear plan before you start!

Doug Carter Artist,. RELAXING 10 X 8
Everyday beauty can be found and seen if you can just stop and relax and then it will show up. I just thought this was the best setting for anyone to feel comfortable in. Very inviting and welcoming, the play with the light and the colors . Take up a chair and tell me how you feel about this one.

Doug Carter Artist,. Embrace 5 X 7
Take the day and what it has for you and make the best of it . You will never see it again and it is full of beauty you just have to stop lone enough to see it . When you do life will become more rich and full of wounder. That's what I try to do every day and sometimes I succeed at it.  One of the hardest things to teach students is to see whats in front of them so they can paint the moment.

Doug Carter Artist, "NEWNESS". 7x5
When its spring and the rain stops everything  starts to bloom,. The lush green fields the streams are full and overflowing. Even the air seems alive and helps us see the colors and life becomes new again. What I like most about this painting is the contrast of last years hay and this years new growth. The colors and the feeling of newness is this even a word ? Take a walk with me into this field and look listen and enjoy.

Resurrection Sunday Is Coming

Doug Carter Artist,
Resurrection Sunday is coming.
And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen;
and have the keys of hell and of death.

" BREAK " By Artist Doug Carter,.
You feel and see a change in the weather. Winter is leaving and spring is pushing through .The cool bluish morning fog breaking into a beautiful new day. You can see the distance lights of the valley afar off . The warmth of the sun breaking through and lighting up the sky with such colors. If a painting could hug you with feelings this is it . I have another coming from the same spot as well.

SETTLED by Artist Doug Carter, 6 X 8 oil painting.

I must have drove past this place hundreds of times right off the road and never noticed it. I feel sometimes that is how life is we really need to stop and smell the roses as its said. Once I found it wanted to capture the  tranquil feeling of this cabin in just the right settings. This is a study for a larger painting and would like to know how you feel about the choice of setting and colors etc. I do appreciate your help and feed back as always enjoy.
